Huckabee
I post this quote from Mike Huckabee, recent Republican Presidential candidate. It is one of the best statements I have ever heard from a politician because it actually demonstrates the Golden Rule. He puts himself into the shoes of another and honestly speculates on how that would feel. “… One other thing I think we’ve got to remember: As easy as it is for those of us who are white to look back and say, “That’s a terrible statement,” I grew up in a very segregated South, and I think that you have to cut some slack. And I’m going to be probably the only conservative in America who’s going to say something like this, but I’m just telling you: We’ve got to cut some slack to people who grew up being called names, being told, “You have to sit in the balcony when you go to the movie. You have to go to the back door to go into the restaurant. And you can’t sit out there with everyone else. There’s a separate waiting room in the doctor’s office. Here’s where you sit on the bus.” And you know what? Sometimes people do have a chip on their shoulder and resentment. And you have to just say, I probably would, too. I probably would, too. In fact, I may have had a more, more of a chip on my shoulder had it been me. “
obama race speech
His words rang with the greatness of King, Kennedy, and Lincoln. The problem is that the problem may still be too big to surmount in one generation. But if he loses, at least he can hold his head up. Obama manned up. People who comment about how we should not give Black people more handouts only prove that they have missed the entire point. For their benefit, here is a translation: The corporate presence is raping us all at the moment, just as some people were systematically persecuted in the not too distant past. Accept that, with all the bruises to our national ego……………. for the benefit of us all.
economy
bushism
Obama’s pastor said something Obama doesn’t agree with! Can you believe that?!!? What if that happened to John McCain? O yeah, he has that supporter that believes all Catholics and Jews are scumbags. What about Hillary? O yeah, she has a supporter that thinks being a Black man with an Afro-centric name is a plus in the United States. What if it happened to George Bush? O yeah, most of his supporters believe that we are in a recession.
go figure
The wife of the governor of New York stands by her man while he publicly acknowledges his betrayal of her for all the world to see. A woman stays in her boyfriend’s bathroom for two years. What do these things have in common? Women are complex creatures that are very hard to figure out. But they are more likely than men to stick it out when the chips are down.
going too ferraro
Geraldine Ferraro has stepped down from an honorary post she held in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign amid a controversy regarding comments she made about Barack Obama. She had stated that the only reason behind Obama’s success is that he is a black man. Ferraro made history as the first woman chosen as a running mate in a presidential election when she was tapped by the Mondale campaign in 1984. However and somehow, she obviously felt bad enough about her credentials to feel that the only reason she was chosen was because she is a woman. How about, she was selected REGARDLESS OF her gender because she was qualified? Or that Obama’s special qualities transcend the racial, uh, inhibitions that are still part of our society? It seems more likely that Ferraro’s intent and comments were designed to put the brakes on the Obama campaign by appealing to the voters who still see people of color in a negative light. That is as suspect as when the news media implies that Obama’s success is tied to record levels of Black support. If record levels of Black support could result in electing someone, wouldn’t Jesse Jackson be president by now? If Obama’s support from all walks of American life is any indication, our country may be ready for it’s first Black President. But as Ms. Ferraro proved, that doesn’t mean racism is dead.
election stuff
What has recently interested me is when the media reported that the Canadian authorities were given assurances from Obama that his negative comments on NAFTA should not to be taken seriously. It was all over the news! An important item that was almost universally left out is that Hilary Clinton had given the Canadians virtually the same assurances. The only difference was that when the Canadian announcement was made, Obama was mentioned first. That distinction apparently made all the difference in the world on how the topic was reported. Or was it just that?
The Clinton campaign has evoked media bias against her several times during the campaign. However, I think the situation is more comprehensive than that and the reasons can’t actually be tied to favoring one candidate over another. It is simply money. The news media has become something akin to a global National Enquirer. Many times, the titillating and controversial seems to take precedence over the actual facts. If they think people want to see Obama in a wonderful light and that sells papers, then that’s what happens. If they think Hilary’s assertion that her campaign is somehow being discriminated against is a bad sales position to take, they try to dispute that by putting the focus on Obama’s negatives. Unfortunately and in the case of this NAFTA issues, the facts fall victim to what the news media feels would sell the most papers.
The Democratic Presidential race is the most exciting in many years. Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama have provided wonderful opportunities for dialogue on many important issues. I can only hope that somebody at the national news hub will report more objectively on both sides for the good of the debate and the good of the country.
